Senge shows us that organizations react on the basis of how processes affect the whole - in both the long run and the short run. Without a deeper understanding of an organization's culture and systemic conditions, there is a major risk that 'development', instead of working as planned, will prove self-defeating. Senge reflects a basically carefully considered humanistic perspective. His contributions also have great significance for our own thinking about strategies for renewal in organizations. But above all, his perspective is important for school improvement - not only because it explains why organizational learning is 'required knowledge' for the coming generation, but also because the institutions themselves have much to learn from Senge if they are going to realize these principles for a learning generation.

Mary: I mean for teachers to empower users to be able to join a group themselves. We had this plugin working for 1.9. It really should be in the core for a constructivist aspirant like Moodle.

There is at least one plug-in for Moodle 1.9 from 2004 (http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/CONTRIB-1273) and thoughts in 2008 of getting it into 1.9 or 2.0 (http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-13962). Implementation loks like it has stalled.

It's a great move, Derek. I'm sure you won't regret it. I think the secret is to have as many strings to your bow as possible, and never say 'no' to a job even if oyu're not sure how you'll do it (time is the only limiting factor)!
Good luck!

No competition in NZ. There is only the Polytechnic who has declared itself Open Ed by writing a policy that defaults all content to CC By. That was the easy part. Now begins the years of undoing the culture grown in our organisation, to think that protecting content and process was "a good business model".

I would suggest that you take my research that is saying that 13 staff at the Polytechnic have generated $80 000 worth of branding awareness and IT capacity by openly publishing their resources on teh Internet. Use that as an argument to review the Copyright Policy of UC. Change that policy so that individuals have the power to determine what copyrights to use, and if that person wishes to us UC as a platform to present their work, that it be licensed CC By.

This way, UC still protects its interests and has open access to any IP produced by a staff member, the staff member gains elements of motivation, and UC and the staff member gain in brand awareness.

Instigating a policy like this is the easy part though. Changing the culture is the hard part. But he culture can't change without a high level policy that removes any threat of the change being undermined later.
